A Webinar on Strategies to Enhance Competitiveness Post Vaccination will be organised by Sabah State Ministry of Finance in collaboration with the Institute for Development Studies (Sabah) (IDS) on Thursday,19 th August 2021 at 9.15 a.m. via ZOOM.

According to IDS’ CEO, Mr. Anthony Kiob, the Sabah State Government’s rapid efforts in the vaccination drive would see significant economic activities opening up within the next couple of months. Hence, businesses will need to be ready with the new norm and strategies to enhance their competitiveness as it is unlikely the infection rate of COVID-19 be totally eradicated just yet.

“The recent curbs are unavoidable, given the sudden flare-up in community cases, therefore the State’s shift in policy emphasis towards learning to live with COVID-19, just as we have with dengue and influenza, could lit up the path to a stronger and broader economic recovery,” Mr. Anthony further elaborated. Other countries are witnessing increased COVID-19 cases daily even though their
population has been vaccinated to almost 80%. Mr Anthony stressed that it is pertinent for our local businesses to be more creative and competitive with new strategies and learn from other developed countries such as Singapore with its “Singapore Recovery Plan”, during these challenging times.

“The Institute and the State Ministry of Finance feels that this webinar is relevant to encourage domestic businesses to develop new strategies in enhancing their competitiveness post vaccination, as well as to engage and have a better understanding of the government’s support and assistance required to strengthen the competitive edge of local businesses in order to create more employment opportunities for the rakyat,” Mr. Anthony explained. Four papers will be presented during the webinar which are New Strategies to Enhance Competitiveness of SMEs Post Vaccination by Mr. Foo Ngee Kee, President of SME Assocciation of Sabah; New Strategies to Speed Up Recovery in the Tourism Sector Post Vaccination by Puan Noredah Othman, General Manager of Sabah Tourism Board; Developing a Competitive Food
Producing Agriculture Sector by Puan Jamilah Lee, General Manager of Koperasi Pembangunan Desa (KPD); and Highlights of Singapore Recovery Plan and Some Lessons for Sabah by Dr. Oh Ei Sun, Senior Fellow in Singapore Institute of International Affairs.
